Lenten Devotional
Today's reading is three full chapters of John's presentation. They are full of information, teaching and great stories. It is hard to pick just one and write on it for today, but I will focus on one and it is the middle story, Jesus first miracle.
There are a number of reasons to start at this point in John's gospel. The demonstration of Jesus' power is a good reason. The belief of the disciples at the end of the narrative is another great reason. These are what many people would focus in a devotional. I must admit that I am a little different. I am of key.
I share this passage with the couples I am getting ready to perform their weeding. During our conversation, I talk about the type of wine Jesus provides in the end. Jesus could have just made something simple, nothing special or out of the ordinary. No, Jesus makes the best wine tasted by the master of the banquet. I am certain that the banquet master has tasted all sorts of wines over the course of his life. To call this one of the best is of central importance. You see, God only wants to provide the best for us. God does not want to provide second or third best. Christ will offer the best to us if we are willing to follow in his steps.
The other point to the story of getting the best is the advice Jesus' mother gives to the servants. “Do whatever he tells you.” Are we doing everything Jesus is telling us? If we are doing everything, remember the blessing did not come to the servants. The blessing came to the couple who got married. Our best will provide for others and we get the opportunity to share in the experience of God's blessing.
